Patriotic, from the heart "thank you card" to those that have served, that defend freedom, and gave their lives.
On a hot July morning, I was going about my normal routine: grab a cup of coffee, read the paper and passively watch the television news. During an update of the Iraq war, a story came on that grabbed my attention. It was of a soldier who had been wounded while carrying out his duty and it struck a chord within me. Sure, like the rest of America, I had been following the war. But it was then that I fully realized something. We live in a country unlike any other in the world. We cherish liberty and are afforded to lie under a blanket of freedom. We embrace ideals that are guarded and protected by those that have worn and currently wear a military uniform. To quote a line from the movie ‘A Few Good Men’, “they stand on a wall and say nothing’s gonna hurt you tonight…not on my watch”.
We have patriotic songs that celebrate this fine country, such as “America the Beautiful”, and “God Bless America”. Songs that are ingrained into the psyche and fabric of this nation. However, they would be empty and meaningless if not for the pillars that support, protect, and defend our way of life. Those pillars being the fine people who have served and are serving in the United States’ military. Whether they’re Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, National Guard Coast Guard... I felt compelled to acknowledge them in my own way and words. Being a songwriter, an idea or inspiration can hit at any time, without provocation or conscience forethought, and that’s what happened with the birth of “Thank You”.
It’s simply a song that expresses sincere and heartfelt appreciation for those that have defended and continue to defend freedom. It’s for soldiers that have stood a post, fought in a war, and gave their life in the service of duty and honor. It’s for every soldier that I say, from the bottom of my heart…
Thank You!
WE DON’T THINK ABOUT ‘EM THAT MUCH
UNTIL THEY’RE HEADED OFF TO WAR
THEN THAT’S WHEN WE GET BEHIND ‘EM
AND GIVE ‘EM ALL OUR SUPPORT
BUT WE SOMETIMES TAKE FOR GRANTED
THAT THEY’VE ALWAYS BEEN AROUND
EACH ONE OF THEM A HERO
FOR DEFENDING THIS SACRED GROUND
THEY KEEP US SAFE AND THEY KEEP US FREE
THEY MAKE THIS COUNTRY PROUD
FROM ONE AMERICAN TO ANOTHER
IT’S TIME THEY HEARD THESE WORDS OUT LOUD
THANK YOU FOR THE JOB YOU DO SO WELL
YOU RISK IT ALL IN FREEDOM’S NAME
AND SOMETIMES GO THROUGH HELL
THANK YOU FOR THE SACRIFICES MADE
FOR THE ONES WHO NEVER CAME BACK HOME
A HIGH PRICE HAS BEEN PAID
IT’S ABOUT TIME WE EXTEND SOME GRATITUDE
LET ME BE THE FIRST IN LINE TO SAY
THANK YOU
I WANNA OFFER MY THANKS TO THOSE MEN
INSIDE THAT V.F.W. TONIGHT
‘CAUSE THEY WERE WILLING TO DO WHATEVER IT TOOK
INCLUDING LAYING DOWN THEIR LIVES
ON LAND, ON SEA, AND IN THE AIR
A TOUGH JOB DAY IN AND DAY OUT
BUT THAT’S WHAT BEING AN AMERICAN SOLDIER
IS ALL ABOUT
THANK YOU FOR THE JOB YOU DO SO WELL
YOU RISK IT ALL IN FREEDOM’S NAME
AND SOMETIMES GO THROUGH HELL
THANK YOU FOR THE SACRIFICES MADE
FOR THE ONES WHO NEVER CAME BACK HOME
A HIGH PRICE HAS BEEN PAID
IT’S ABOUT TIME WE EXTEND SOME GRATITUDE
LET ME BE THE FIRST IN LINE TO SAY
THANK YOU
