Another entry to the "it should have been me" genre - in this case the "best man" bemoans, in hopefully a "funky" way, not getting the bride
I wanted to change from the rock format and do something a bit more funky. Once I'd worked out the rhythm and the chords the first line of the lyrics popped up and I went from there.
There was darkness in your eyes
As you came storming down the aisle
I could see your twisted curling lip
Your dark foreboding smile
Thought the day had finally come
When you and I could be as one
I could give myself to you
Camp myself under your thumb
I'd kept my counsel for so long
While he just treated you so wrong
I'd ground my teeth, chewed my lip
And bit off half my tongue
Hoped before that fatal day
You'd see the errors of his ways
That you'd finally found a way out
From his convoluted maze
Why did you stay
You could have walked right out the door
Gone the other way
Why did you say
"Yes I do, I do, I will
Love, Honour Obey"
I thought you'd finally got the word
You finally knew the score
He'd cheat you and mistreat you
Just the way he's done before
I tried to let you know girl
Just as clearly as I can
I really only wanted
To be your not his best man
Why did you stay
You could have walked right out the door
Gone the other way
Why did you say
"Yes I do, I do, I will
Love, Honour Obey"
This whole damn thing is crazy, girl
This whole damn thing is strange
You took him to the altar girl
But you'll never make him change
I tried to let you know girl
Just as clearly as I can
I really only wanted
To be your not his best man
Imagine my surprise,
Despite the hatred in your eyes
You kept on walking down that aisle
To claim your booby prize
I just stood there in the wings
Fiddled with that ring
When I handed it to him
I heard the congregation sing
Why did you stay
You could have walked right out the door
Gone the other way
Why did you say
"Yes I do, I do, I will
Love, Honour Obey"
Why did you stay
Why did you stay
