Story behind the song
I wrote this during the period my son was undergoing chemotherapy. It was my only catharsis.
Lyrics
Garrett’s Song The things that I have learned from life In only this past year Could fill a book with words, my friend And fill a lake with tears. I’ve looked into the saddest eyes My own have shown the same. To see these ravaged children here, I have cursed God’s Holy Name. Why? I just don’t know. Why must these little children suffer so? Where pray tell is God’s Great Plan? I only want to understand. As I watch my darling son endure These tortures he must face. I see the scars upon his body, Wipe the tears off of his face. To the very God who has angered me, I pray, please heal my son. Take this cancer from him, Lord, Let his trials be done. Why? I just don’t know. Why must these little children suffer so? Where pray tell is God’s Great Plan? I only need to understand. We see the other parents here, They see us too we know. Without a word we share our pain, A bond between us grows. Like reflections in a looking glass, We know we see ourselves The anguish shared between us, The fears we dare not tell. Why? I just don’t know. Why must these little children suffer so? Where pray tell is God’s Great Plan? I only want to understand. For some of us this hell on earth Will someday surely end. But these children and their parents, Won’t be the same again. Yes I have learned from life this year, But mostly from my son. To hold your children close to you, Until your time is done. Why? I just don’t know. Why must these little children suffer so? Where on earth is God’s Great Plan? I only need to understand. Please God help me understand.
