At a funeral I heard the story of an early Irish settler to New Zealand who bought himself a farm
in the King Country. At this time there was a law forbidding the sale or manufacture of alcohol.
Our man James Smyth set up a poitin still just like he had back in the old country and went about
supplying the other local settlers with his illicit drink. He soon found himslef in trouble with the law and spent some time behind bars for his trouble.
