Story behind the song
I heard stories from an Indian girl friend about growing up in rural India, about the way Indian girls were sometimes not highly valued at the time. Madhu entered school with a nickname her teacher told her she couldn't use; so she named herself. A good name, the Hindi word for honey.
Lyrics
In the Northern part of the Southern part of Asia In Faridabad that lies in Haryana Earth, Wind, Fire, Water and love, in 1959 Created Madhu, honey, warm dark sweet and fine Haryana woman, halfway around the world Haryana Madhu, beautiful Indian girl A flashing smile and eyes that glow like embers Long dark hair and beauty I'll remember But the beauty that I love so well Cannot be touched or seen It's Earth, Wind, Fire, Water and Love Much more than mere words can mean Don't know much about the land you come from But I know all I'll ever need to know There must be love and goodness there This I know is true 'Cause only love and goodness could grow a girl like you So here's to the folks who live in the South of Asia In Faridabad that lies in Haryana Where Earth, Wind, Fire, Water and Love Created my Madhu 'Cause Earth, Wind, Fire and Water alone Could not create Madhu Haryana people, from halfway around the world Haryan people, we love your Haryana girl.
