Story behind the song
wanted to do this cover for a while but also wanted to get the song down into two parts, first being a sort of straight reading (albeit still with our vibe across it) and second part with a sort of soundtrack type feel, which kept some of the original elements of the '68 classic but 'played' with them a bit i.e.- slowing it down, speeding it up and using various samples of some vincent price type craving 'ultimate power', an american asking about being 'truly alive' and a couple of Indian holy men chanting/wailing...with the last holy man I wanted a type of Youssou N'Dour 'In Your Eyes' effect (the PG song from '86)... I was hopeful of the second half being different to the first yet still from listener's perspective cognisant that they belong together...if that makes sense (or if even achieved, haha), lol!
Lyrics
"ever increasing power.." Please allow me to introduce myself I'm a man of wealth and taste I've been around for a long, long year Stole many a man's soul and faith Pleased to meet you Hope you guessed my name But what's puzzlin' you Is the nature of my game I rode a tank, held a generals rank Blitzkrieg raged and the bodies stank...well... I shouted out who killed the Kennedys When after all it was you and me Pleased to meet you Hope you guessed my name But what's puzzlin' you Is the nature of my game I watched with glee While your kings and queens Fought for ten decades For the gods they made I've been around for a long, long year Stole many a man's soul and faith Pleased to meet you Hope you guessed my name But what's puzzlin' you Is the nature of my game? Get on down oooooh, ah ahhhh "there was a time when I believed in humanity, and that time is long gone, many things have changed and I was forced to believe only in power, ever increasing power..." "can you describe a moment when you felt truly alive, felt truly alive, felt truly alive, felt truly alive..."
