I got fired. 20 years ago but it still hurts
This is the first of 2 songs reacting to getting fired 20 years ago. I was still pretty angry about it but writing this, and the follow up "Happier", helped me finally get over it.
Bastards.
At first it felt good
Taking the risks, showing I could
At first it was OK
Winning the prizes, king for a day
Proving them all wrong
One of the winners, one of the strong
Why didn't I feel
The circling jackals close for the kill?
Now I'm backed in a corner
And there's nowhere to go
Outmanoeuvred, old and slow
It's what you get for punching way above your weight
Now I'm facing the inevitable fall from grace
I started something going and it left me behind
Humiliation seared into my mind
You start the fire and it burns you down
Nice work, Icarus, see you around.
Once they've had their free ride
Your greedy followers push you aside
There's no sentiment
In heartless betrayal with malice intent
See how the monster
Turns so gleefully on its creator
You've outlived your use
They take your name, salt in the wound
Now I'm backed in a corner
And there's nowhere to go
Outmanoeuvred, old and slow
It's what you get for punching way above your weight
Now I'm facing the inevitable fall from grace
I started something going and it left me behind
Humiliation seared into my mind
You start the fire and it burns you down
Nice work, Icarus, see you around.
