I wrote my full length musical adaptation of Beauty and the Beast in 1984-1986. It was produced in 1986, 2 weeks before Disney released their version of the fairytale. It was produced a second time in 1991.
Last night, as I lay quiet
Hoping sleep might find me
I heard a curious pattering by
the bedroom door
Taking candle with me,
I spied a fleeting image down the hall
I call...
No answer
It happened times before
Repeating the same phenomenon
But each time revealing nothing at
opening the door
My rest is so uneasy
The image of the ghost within the hall...
I call...
No answer
And when I do sleep my dreams are filled with the vision
Of a man of noble birth
He wears a prince's crown, this handsome apparition
and robes of royalty's worth
He asks me for my hand
but I refuse
Why do I do so, in my dream?
I am so confused...
Perhaps it is a bashful hero
shy at the sight of a night-clad maid
And I long to tell him not to be afraid
but as I watch the sensitive spirit fade
down the hall, I
call...
No answer
I call...
No answer
I call.....
