Story behind the song
This is either a love song using maritime imagery - or an anthropomorphic representation of man's relationship with the sea... (or maybe both!). The inspiration was found in Iceland, but the song mentions Alaska (well, you try fitting an Icelandic place name into a song....) The photo is of Dalvic Harbour in the far north.
Lyrics
She shipped out from Alaska and cruised back in my life Am C F C Caressed my brow and sang a soft refrain F C And I didn’t want to ask her ‘cause I couldn’t take the strife Am Em F C So I let her set her moorings once again F C G I know I should be wary, I know I should be wise I know I should have firmly closed the door But you know my thoughts can vary, and you might well surmise That when emotion reigns then logic hit’s the floor F G Am rep F G C She gave no explanation, no promises were made Em Am Em Am There were no revelations, no favours were repaid Em Am F G We slipped back into rhythm, the past just slipped away Am C G7 Am For it counts for less than nothing in her arms Dm G She feckless as the weather, persistent as the sea Am C F C Yet soothes like waves upon a shingle shore F C So you mix it all together in some maritime decree Am Em F C And when she’s gone you’ll end up wanting more F G Am And when she’s gone you’ll end up wanting more F G C instrumental There’s mist upon the mountains, there’s dew upon the grass A mournful tang of autumn in the air There’s sweetness but a sadness that just won’t seem to pass A foretaste of the times when she’s not there You told yourself you’d never give in to her again You swore you had the strength now to weather any pain But you crumbled like a castle that’s surrounded by the waves For it counted less than nothing in her arms She feckless as the weather, persistent as the sea Yet soothes like waves upon a shingle shore So you mix it all together in some maritime decree And when she’s gone you’ll end up wanting more And when she’s gone you’ll end up wanting more
