With guest cowboy $Bill on mandolin, slide resonator, bass and jaws harp, and me on guitars, banjo, harmonica, vocals and tambourine.
I was tidying my studio and found a spare soft guitar case ... "maybe the banjo would fit in that" I thought (banjo's not been played for years) ..... picked it up, strummed it, hmmm almost in tune, tuned it (open D) ... thought I'd have a little play on it before I put it away for another few years ....... and this song was born.
After a couple of false starts the lyrics just fell into place once the first verse was written..... start with 'chickens' then rhyme with 'hitching' and 'itching' and the rest is easy.
In the arrangement I wanted it to sound like a relaxed band of maybe 10 people just jamming along to a simple sing-along song, just having a good time. Thanks to $Bill for joining in the fun.
Early in the morning
the chickens have been fed
we're hitching up the wagon
dressed in our Sunday best
I'm itching for to get to church so see my Sarah Jane
The horses are restless and I am the same
One day is lonely, two is quite enough
Three is far too long and by four its getting tough
five is like a fever, six is like a pain
seven is forever till I see my girl again
Oh Lord I am no sinner
except perhaps in thought
Please look the other way a while
so I will not get caught
Apple pie is on the table
and I should not complain
But I'd give it all away
For a piece of Sarah Jane
