We have all caught ourselves living in the past.
Written in the parking lot of a Best Western in Tallahassee Florida at 3:00 am on a very hot August night. The trees we all covered in spanish moss which took on a melancholy glow under the security lights.
In The Present Day
Dan Edwards 2015
Spanish moss hangs from the trees
Telling tales from days of old.
It’s always living in the past
It's afraid of letting go.
Spends it’s whole life reaching out towards the ground
Like it’s searching for a Love
That's lost and can’t be found.
If I could I would just set it free
Break the bonds that hold it to the tree
I'd let the breeze carry it far, far away
Maybe find that Love living in the present day
I’ve spent my whole life looking for a Love that will last
Problem is that I keep looking in the past
In the past I’ve sunk the better part of me
A lot like the roots of the moss in that tree
And now the only thought I have left that is clear
Is that the past is never gonna get me out of here
I know I’ve got to set myself free
Break the bonds the past has over me
Let the breeze carry me far away
Maybe find that Love living in the present day
You know, the only thought I have left that is clear
Is that the past is never gonna get me…
Out of here.
