Eulogy for El
'El' was a simple cat –
hid his illness well –
perked up when he saw me,
right up until the end, too weak to raise his head.
He was robbed of the second half of his life –
lived only about eight years –
I imagined him a wise old cat,
graying face, bent whiskers...
He did not reproduce, but,
thinking about it,
his life was neither meaningless nor in vain –
he made me realize that nature,
in advancing life,
not only works by trial and error,
but by chance encounter, too.
Though his life was cut in half,
I think he would have been happy to know,
if he could know such things,
that he contributed to life in general,
which I dutifully note here.
His scent lingers –
I lifted him up to my eye level -
he looked at me in wonder, I at him.
So sad to lose such a wondrous thing.
