A piece about how others attempt to control our thoughts through a constant barrage from the media portals. We are expected and do come to believe in the most horrible concepts that counter our own self-being.

I hear voices as I sleep
And in the daylight while I creep
On concrete sidewalks cracked and dry.
Your blinded eyes and broken speech
Pass by beneath or behind my reach,
But I hear voices.
Speaking from the books I read,
Yelling from the outernet,
TV chanters, radios, phones
Electric outlets, static drones …
Oh hard world if I should do
What they have asked of me.
Yet their seduction bleeds my will;
Mere drops will soon a bucket fill.
No hidden forest or silent shore,
The winds through the leaves, the ocean’s roar,
They carry the words like an air borne plague.
I hear the voices.
Do you know them?
Do you nod your head?
Your answer turns me cold with dread.
I thought this affliction isolated me,
But we hear voices.
Tell me how you carry on,
How you’ve found the strength to resist the song,
How you sleep at night in the quiet dark,
How you’ve silenced the voices so long?
No answer, but I see it in your eyes.
You turn away, have you heard a call?
Don’t answer, don’t do what they say.
But I know … I know
I’ve heard the voices too.
