There are two sites you can visit that can explain it better than I can: www.publicdomainsherpa.com. This one explains in detail and has a Copyright Calculator that helps determine whether a song recording is public domain or not. You can also search for music copyrights at: wwwcopyright.gov, look for registrations and documents. Sound recordings before 1989 can be identified as public domain if they do not have the copyright symbol: (the letter P in a circle); the year of first publication of the sound recording; and the name of the copyright owner. Recordings after 1989 do not have to have a copyright symbol, so you have to search the records. Most of my recordings are from reel to reel tape, several lp, and some cd. Because these are mostly high school and college bands (and I played in these bands) they did not copyright the recordings. Most pro. bands, orchestras, hip hop, etc... have the copyright symbol.

(continued; SC allows only a certain number of characters per message) However there are some band sites I have found on SC (ie "Goose Creek Bands") that have uploaded music from cds that I know have the copyright because I bought these cds myself. So, I'm kinda confused about that. I hope this helps. You are welcome to post a message or question on my page. Ivan Tavarres

What makes it possible to add recordings to soundclick? How do you determine that the music is in the public domain? Michelle Hanzlick still owns the copyright to her father, James Clifton Williams' music for instance. Does Soundclick have some sort of agreement with ASCAP or Harry Fox Agency that will allow us to post the music? I personally have over 1000 cd's of symphonic band music and over 100 old records of band musics, some of which I have digitalized and cleaned up and would be interested in adding them to the community if it would be legal. As I am new to Soundclick I would appreciate any insight you may already have as to how Soundclick functions. Rich

Hello Rich, thank you very much for the friend request and also for adding all of the music to your station! I R-E-A-L-L-Y do appreciate it! I see you are also a fan of symphonic band music and I am really glad you found my page and that you like the music. I still have several more recordings to sort through and digitize and upload, and I try to add 1 or 2 each day. If there is a particular song you are looking for, let me know and I will see if I have it. BTW, I lived in California when I went to college and the USAF, and I sure miss it, especially the wonderful weather. Thanks again and please keep in touch. And, welcome to Soundclick! Ivan Tavarres
