Leased Beats vs. Exclusive Beats
May 1, 2010

For all the new artists out there looking to buy beats, here a quick rundown of some of your options :
Standard Lease: This is the cheapest way to purchase a beat. You are licensed an untagged mp3 file which you can use for one commercial/profitable use, up to 5,000 copies in most cases. This is a great option for mixtape artists.
Premium Lease: This option is obviously a little pricier, but well worth the extra cash. You get the mp3 and the individually tracked out WAV files. This allows you to take it to a professional engineer for mixing and mastering. Most producers allow you unlimited profitable use up to 50,000 copies
Ex-Rights: The priciest option grants you full ownership of the beat (duh?)
Alot of the artists I manage are adamant about getting exclusive rights, but I try to steer them towards a premium lease. To be honest, 95% of artists are never going to be successful let alone sell 50,000 copies, so why worry about another artist using the beat? Put your ego aside and spend that money on marketing and promotion. Make sure your song is registered with BMI or ASCAP so if it blows up, you can get paid!
