I just bought a nifty pair of M-Audio BX8a Deluxe monitors. My desk space is a thing of the past, but holy jebus these things are quite a step up from my 10-year old Altec Lansing kit, and relatively cheap too! Now if only I could get an official endor$ement from M-Audio for using a bunch of their cheap gear :) As a direct result of this recent investment, I've gone and remastered all my tracks. Now everything sounds richer, louder, better laid out in the stereo field. I've been a sound-quality nut for years, now finally my own music can hold up to my high standards.
WARNING: You're likely to be offended by this post. If you have low self-esteem, you'd best leave. I'm relatively new on SoundClick, in the sense that I just recently created an account. My buddy Bitburn has been on here for a few years now, which is unstandable since he's a professional musician with a large body of work. Thing is, I only recently started browsing the music on here, mostly in the Electronic category since that's what I do. Here's my complaint: there's a mountain of suck on this site! I don't know if it's particularly concentrated in this category, but after sifting through the top 100 tracks there's only one band that I *really* liked, and at most 2-3 other tracks that I found remotely acceptable. Now that I have your attention, allow me to tweak you further. I'm not basing my judgement so much on personal preference, partly because I enjoy a very broad variety of music and being an avid gamer and hacker, I have a high tolerance for cheesiness. My criticism relates to the care put into these tracks. They lack refinement, consistency, structure... They remind me of the massive influx of filth that occurred when Acid 1.0 was released. They sound like the hundreds of unreleased tracks I have sitting on my hard drive, only worse. It's always tricky to criticize any creative product, but my annoyance concerns the lack of creativity that pervades the charts. Perhaps we need a better ranking system to help find gems in the rough, which are currently shrouded under this mountain of garbage. On a more personal note, I wish I could encourage everyone to try harder, to put more effort and patience into their work. Like I mentioned earlier, I have tons of tracks that just aren't ready yet. Maybe the mix is a bit off, or the pacing doesn't feel right, or maybe I'm still looking for the perfect synth programming for that hook... whatever the case, I'm not happy with them and I won't put them in people's ears until they're the best I can make them. Many of those tracks will never see the light of day, though many of their elements get reused elsewhere. I probably have anywhere from 10 to 20 unused tracks for every one I release. I only put out my very best and I hope it shows. I would also like to hear very best. If you have any songs that aren't quite as good as your other ones, take them down! Seriously, hide them, let them simmer while you figure out what's off about them... keep on tweaking until it's absolutely perfect. If you don't challenge yourself, how can you ever improve ?
I don't have anything here yet, but I invite you to go check out the stuff I've done with my good friend Bitburn for our digital supergroup "FukdebasS". My music has been described as "cold", which is to be expected from a brutal cynic and borderline sociopath :) I hope you enjoy, and if you don't, well, not even god can save you!
