I think I'm approaching songwriting from a wrong perspective.
I was in high school when I first picked up the guitar. The only people I knew back then who also played were really really good, or so I thought. You see, they were the kind of people who have this compulsive urge to solo over everything. To them, you were nothing unless you played riffs and soloed all day long.
I was never like that. I've never been great at soloing. I enjoy playing chords. Back then, I enjoyed playing simple, open chord songs, and I was made to feel like dirt for it.
I guess that's stuck with me all these years. I've been trying to write riff-based songs because, as I learned in high school, it's the only kind of song people want to hear.
Lately, though, I've realized that there's a lot of really good, open chord-based songs out there. I've been listening to artists like Lynn Miles, Ron Sexsmith, and Hawksley Workman (all Canadian artists!) who are just the most amazing songwriters. They are the people I would love to emulate.
I would love to write music I'm happy with, not music that those guys in high school seemed to love so much.

Blues-based song number one

So last night I started the framework for the first new song of my album. It's nothing more than a simple G, D, E chord progression and a bluesy riff, but it's a really good start considering the drought that I've been experiencing as of late.
I think I'm having some problems with my Tascam recorder, though. The USB latentcy is making it almost impossible to record three minutes without it harming the waveforms. I'll have to do some more research on that, because both my computer and the Tascam are basically new.
I'm going to work on this song more in the next week, and hopefully I'll have some sort of demo I can upload on here. Until then, wish me luck... I'll need it!

While my intentions with this whole album project remain good, I'm afraid I'm going to have to admit something. It really pains me to say this, but I'm starting to have some serious doubts about maintaining my one-song-a-month goal. My third semester at school has just.
