I just posted a new song called "The Christmas Song" on my profile page. Many people know this now classic ballad was originaly recorded by Nat King Cole. What you may not know is the story behind how it was written. The song was written by Mel Torme, and Bob Wells way back in 1945, here is an account by Mel Torme as to how this song came to be.... "One excessively hot afternoon, I drove out to Bob's house [Robert Wells] in Toluca Lake for a work session. The San Fernando Valley, always at least ten degrees warmer than the rest of the town, blistered in the July sun.... I opened the front door and walked in.... I called for Bob. No answer. I walked over to the piano. A writing pad rested on the music board. Written in pencil on the open page were four lines of verse: Chestnuts roasting on an open fire Jack frost nipping at your nose Yuletide carols being sun by a choir And folks dressed up like Eskimos. When Bob finally appeared, I asked him about the little poem. He was dressed sensibly in tennis shorts and a white T-shirt, but he still looked uncomfortably warm. "It was so damn hot today," he said, "I thought I'd write something to cool myself off. All I could think of was Christmas and cold weather." I took another look at his handiwork. "You know," I said, "this just might make a song." We sat down together at the piano, and, improbable though it may sound, "The Christmas Song" was completed about forty-five minutes later. Excitedly, we called Carlos Gastel, sped into Hollywood, played it for him, then for Johnny Burke, and then for Nat Cole, who fell in love with the tune. It took a full year for Nat to get into a studio to record it, but his record finally came out in the last fall of 1946; and the rest could be called our financial pleasure." I have posted a version of this song just recorded by "yours truly", I certainly hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed singing it.
The night of the election I was home in my studio working, and watching the election results filter in. When I heard McCain's capitulation speech, I switched to a live video feed from downtown Orlando where thousands of people had gathered near City Hall. I thought "I have about a half hour before Obama's victory speech"..."I want to be in the middle of this when it happens". I jumped into my shoes like a fireman on his way to the pole, and out the door I sped. It took me about 15 minutes to get downtown. Lo and behold... the angels sang..and a parking space opened as I drove in to downtown Orlando. It was as if the heavens parted, and I was granted entry. As I got out of my car I felt an electricity in the air, similar to the feeling you get when you enter the streets of Manhattan from Port Authority. As I walked I heard crowd noises, then the roar of a thousand voices in unison..cheers..a sound unique..that makes your heart jump. I smiled, and doubled my pace. From the darkened side streets I could see up ahead, lights and smoke, cop cars, and cabs, srrounded by a sea of humanity. Only in a city can you experience this, and only once in a millenium does a night like this happen! There I was, heart pumping, surrounded by neon, chrome, steel and glass, smoke and sirens, and pizza by the slice. I came upon the downtown square, face to face with a bank plaza filled every inch by a sea of humanity, of every color, from all walks of life, all facing toward a 50 foot tevevision screen mounted on the side of the building. When I finally stoped to watch the screen, everything around me began to slow down to half time. I cued into what seemed to be a reflection, but no it was NOT a reflection, it was a continuation of what I was experiencing, but continued in Grant Park in Chicago! As I could hear the whispers, and shouts, I could see the hope in the eyes of the people all around me. I could almoast hear the guestion in the air "could it be?", "could it really be that a new world, a new reality, really be that close?". The answer was yes. I am greatfull that I made a choice to be there, and I am comfortable in the knowing that nobody can ever take that moment away from me. I am even more comfortable knowing that I had a hand in making it happen. : ) David
I have been thinking about this whole wallstreet thing today, and I must admit I am a little confused by the whole thing. Did you ever hear about the wolf in the hen house? This is what I think of this whole thing as it stands today. The farmer goes to the hen house and finds that his hens are missing. He asks the wolf "Do you know what happened to the hens?' Wolf: "Nope" Farmer: Well...you spent some time in here, you probably know a little something about hens. Tell you what..you help me figure out what happened the hens and I'll pay you." Wolf: "o.k." Farmer: "Looks like you have been having some hard times lately...tell you what, what do you need? Take what ever you need for yourself, and to help figure out whats going on with the hens..what do you think you'll need?" Wolf: "Well..700 Billion would be a good start." Farmer: "Alright, you get started, bill me, and let me know how it all works out." Wolf: "No problem I'll handle it". Wolf winks at the Farmer. Farmer: "Great". Farmer winks at Wolf. The End Thats the way it looks so far to me anyway. David
