MR HILARIOUS are a classic rock, grindcore band from Manchester, UK. Formed in 1986, they quickly established a cult following due to their outrageous lyrical content and offstage brawling and other antics. MR HILARIOUS is Mr. Hilarious (vocals), Mr. Ridiculous (guitars and effects), Roger (bass guitar), and Donald "Donny the Drummer" Garret (drums). The last name of Roger has always been withheld due to the bassits extreme devotion to his family and their privacy. The true names of Mr. Hilarious and Mr. Ridiculous have never been revealed. The band was initially formed as a retaliation for a long-held high school spat with another child, but when the four youths realized that they enjoyed doing what they were doing, they continued and, excluding an almost 9 year hiatus from the late 19990s to mid 2000's, have not stopped since.
Band/artist history
HISTORY Formation and Early Years(1986-1989) MR HILARIOUS formed in October of 1986 as part of a rivalry between the four youths and another youth who has only ever been referred to as Peter by the band. According to the band, they formed to stop Peter's band from winning a local battle of the bands, which, they say, they did go on to win. There is no evidence to support this story outside of the group's own insistence that it is true. Whatever the truth behind what happened in 1986 between these four Manchester youths, they made themselves known quickly and definitively in 1987. Early in the year they were seen all over Manchester and the surrounding areas playing many shows and by July of that year, they had released their first demo, a five-song EP entitled THE MR HILARIOUS ATTACK, which included the song that in seven months had already become their anthem, the irreverantly titled "I Rape for Blowjobs". For the next two years the band continued to play shows, with a small tour of Europe in late 1988 to early 1989. THAT'S MR HILARIOUS TO YOU(1990-1992) In September of 1989 the band was signed by Universal Records and quickly went to work making THAT'S MR HILARIOUS TO YOU, which was released in March of the following year. This album included the hit songs "Mr. Hilarious Knows What to Do", "Mr Hilarious and a Tommygun", and a song that would go on to become a long-term crowd pleaser, "Look out We Rock". With THAT'S MR HILARIOUS TO YOU the band had honed in almost immediately on the sound they desired-- "a dark, raw force of ego, bitterness and hatred" as Mr Hilarious said in a 1994 interview(1). The album was met with critical praise and launched them into large big name tours in the following years with a few intersections with such artists as U2 and Lenny Kravitz. WHAT WE SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE, WE DID WITHOUT QUESTION(1993-1996) After two years of solid, nonstop touring following THAT'S MR HILARIOUS TO YOU, the band fell to demand from both the fans and Universal Records, and in 1993 they returned to the studio to put together their sophmore album. Completed at breakneck speed by May, 1993, this new album, WHAT WE SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE, WE DID WITHOUT QUESTION, built upon their early work. Straying away from more of the boastful, egotistical lyrical content of THAT'S MR HILARIOUS TO YOU, this album focused on the sort of blatant shockrock offensiveness the band originally based themselves upon. Murder, rape, and bathroom humor were the theme behind this album and the band met it with the same vigor as they met their previous album. Initially fans did not know how to take this album, but when the tour started and the sheer aggression of the album was seen live it became an instant hit, outselling their debut album by twenty-five thousand copies. In 1994 the band fine-tuned their short but sweet setlist into something that, according to constant sell-out shows, fans could not get enough of. The following two years were interspersed with tours and, in the meantime between short bursts of touring, highly publicized brawls throughout Los Angeles, New York, London, Paris, and Amsterdam. The band had seemed to had let things go to their head and were regularly wandering around the steets, drunk, boasting about themselves and their accomplishments, getting into any fights that they could. Tours had become a fantastic monstrosity of overdone effects, oversold venues, and excessive after show drinking, fighting, and drug abuse. TAKING NUMBERS CUTTING OFF TOES(1997-1998) In January of 1997, Universal Records corraled the band with threats of dropping them, and, more importantly their funding for their massive tours. The band immediately returned to Manchester to begin recording their third album, TAKING NUMBERS CUTTING OFF TOES. The album, released in November of that year, was an overwhelming failure. MR HILARIOUS had become too big for their own good and, thinking they could do almost anything and get away with it, put out an experimental album that showed almost no respect for the fans. The succinct aggression of their early classic rock, grindcore work was traded in for songs that flowed and drifted in a way akin to progressive rock. The lyrics were no longer offensive or boastful, they were instead philosophical poetry, something not expected of the band after ten years, nor was it accepted. The band did a brief tour from January to March of 1998, but it was cut short when Universal Records, having not gotten a return on their investment for TAKING NUMBERS CUTTING OFF TOES, dropped MR HILARIOUS. Mr Hilarious, Mr Ridiculous, Donny the Drummer, and Roger suddenly fell out of the newspapers and gossip columns, seeming to have instantly shed the limelight and gone underground. MR HILARIOUS, it appeared, was through, with no official explanation from the band. BACK TO ATTACK(1999-present) From 1999 to 2004 nothing was heard from the band, save for Mr Ridiculous, who in summer of 2000 surfaced in a solo project(see Other Projects, below). Then, in winter of 2004, rumors began to spread that MR HILARIOUS was doing secret shows at private parties. There was no evidence to support these rumors and the few lingering fans did not, on the whole, believe that the band was going to make a reunion. Until, that is, MR HILARIOUS triumphant return on July 2, 2005, when the band made a brief yet very impactful appearance during Live 8 in Hyde Park in London. The band quickly played their beloved "I Rape for Blowjobs" before jumping off stage and losing themselves in the crowd following the now legendary words of frontman Mr Hilarious, "We'll we're back, ok? Back to attack. 2006!!" MR HILARIOUS did not disappoint. In April of 2006, they appeared on the popular internet networking site, www.myspace.com , with a brand new song, "MR HILARIOUS EXPLORES THE TENDER BEAUTIES OF LIFE". There was no doubt that the song represented a return to the sound that the fans loved and MR HILARIOUS soon regained their popularity. By November 2006, MR HILARIOUS had completed their fourth album, BACK TO ATTACK. This album included a revamped "I Rape for Blowjobs" and the band's newest anthem, "The Dark Woods Epic". "The Dark Woods Epic" was an experimental track itself, but it was much more focused than anything from the previous album, and the lyrics were the darkest the fans had yet seen from MR HILARIOUS. In 2006 the band also made their first music videos, one for "Women Aren't Bright" and one for "The Dark Woods Epic". Both were met with praise from the fans and if there was any worry that the band might still stray, the brutality, absurdity, and wrecklessness proven in this videos soon quelled such worries. MR HILARIOUS were certainly back to attack, and they were not going to stop attacking ever again. The band continues to this day and are currently working on their next album, THE DICK YOU'RE PLAYING WITH. They enjoy a new intimacy with their fans through the networking abilities of the internet and hope to launch on a new tour soon. OTHER PROJECTS Although they claim to have had many offers for outside collaborations and solo work, no member has ever done anything outside of MR HILARIOUS except for Mr Ridiculous who, in 2000, launched a brief and widely unpublicized career as a dj. He worked under the name Ridiculicious. It is rumored that he prepared an album in late 2003, possibly early 2004, though he never released any recorded songs during his solo career. During these years he was only seen at popular clubs and nightclubs in Manchester and occassionaly Los Angeles, but was not known to engage in any behavior that had become typical of the band by the late 90s. He is also reported to have avidly refused all requests for an interview and never spoke publicly about what had become of MR HILARIOUS or its members.
