CHiLLUM WOODS ROOTS is an African roots reggae project within the music production company CHiLLUM WOODS SOUND. Our first reggae album, titled ‘The Pearl in Reggae’s Crown’ is due to be released in July 2007 and features the immense vocal talents of Akiiki Romeo (2003 Pearl of Africa Music award winner), the veteran Ugandan baritone John Kaahwa and up-coming new vocalists Cultureman, Thornhead and Sayed. The album is written and produced by Gdava Woods. Three of the songs from the album have been playing daily on FM radio stations throughout Uganda (with ‘You’ reaching the coveted number one spot) and once the album is complete, then promotion and marketing will be broadened to cover the whole of Africa and worldwide. CHiLLUM WOODS SOUND is run by experienced professional musicians from the UK and Uganda and we always strive to ensure that all singers and instrumentalists get a fair deal, to help create real music careers and to develop the Ugandan music industry. There are other so-called reggae artistes and groups in Uganda, but the vast majority of the music should be classified as dancehall or ragga, rather than roots reggae. Of course, these genres have their markets, too, but we are most interested in the live band sound and conscious, responsible lyrics that are associated with roots. Although reggae was created in Jamaica, Africa is at the heart of all reggae music and this genre is still growing in popularity throughout the world. Reggae fans are interested in hearing music from countries other than Jamaica and with East Africa being the birthplace of mankind and so spiritually significant for Rastafarians, CHiLLUM WOODS ROOTS is growing in popularity. Reggae fans have always been interested in African reggae and the two main stars Lucky Dube and Alpha Blondy have served them well over the last few decades. However, the current explosion in reggae throughout Africa has spawned an interest in new African reggae artistes and CHiLLUM WOODS ROOTS is leading the pack here in East Africa.
Band/artist history
CHiLLUM WOODS ROOTS creates quality African roots reggae. CHiLLUM WOODS SOUND (the record label and production company) has its roots in reggae, as the project started in 1995 in Manchester, UK, as a live dub reggae band (simply called CHiLLUM WOODS). Many of the talented players of instruments studied classical music at the Royal Northern College of Music. Since then, CHiLLUM WOODS SOUND has diversified, traveled and matured and thankfully the reggae seed has germinated again in the form of CHiLLUM WOODS ROOTS in 2006 in Kampala, Uganda. CHiLLUM WOODS ROOTS is directed by Gdava Woods. Gdava has many years of experience in writing, arranging, performing and producing roots reggae, thanks to valuable mentoring in Jamaican bands and studios in Manchester and Birmingham, UK, as well as Jamaica itself. Although this 'Jamaican education' is clearly evident in Gdava's compositions, lyrics, arrangements and production style, three years of residing in East Africa (Tanzania and currently Uganda) has added new elements to the sound, not least due to the close working and reasoning relationship between Gdava and Akiiki Romeo, who features on many CHiLLUM WOODS ROOTS songs. Entirely created and produced in East Africa, the birthplace of mankind, this is true roots reggae. After all, we all have our roots in East Africa.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
CHiLLUM WOODS ROOTS musicans can regularly be heard playing around Uganda. We are currently finishing some studio work and developing our distribution networks, while also buying land in the African bush in western Uganda, to build our residential studios and offices. So, we plan to star touring the festivals (both reggae and world music) during 2008. We have all the key players and the necessary session musicians ready. Please contact me for bookings.
Your musical influences
Pure, quality African roots reggae with a variety of guest vocalists and concious lyrics. Variety of styles, but one-drop reggae is favoured. Expect live brass, guitars and percussion, superb singing and yodelling and production that is unprecedented in East Africa.
What equipment do you use?
My ears. And a couple of good quality studio condenser mics, a small mixing-desk, a PC running Logic and a pair of nice studio monitors.
