Watson Kain features guitarist/songwriter Scott Watson and his wife Heather Kain Watson on vocals and violin,We love to record and always call on our friends to add anything from French Horn to Bass to anything you can imagine. We enjoy the art of creating music rather than being in the rat race of playing gigs though we have played our share. We formed in 1997 and have had as many as 22 members or as few as 2 over the decade and a half that we've been together. We've decided to go on hiatus as of 2010 in order to focus on raising our children but the possibility still remains that we will return to the studio sometime soon. In the meantime you can check out Scott's current band Karmic Debt right here on Soundclick.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
It's kinda hard to play dead... Some form of this band did play live at one point of time but it was a total nightmare since we had close to 12 people in the band plus we added a small orchestra at one point. The sound man choked at one of the gigs we had and ran out of mics and inputs. I think we scared him when we told him how complicated the mix was going to be. It turned out ok considering everyone at the show was either a friend or a drunk or a drunk friend! Now to dig up that video...
Your musical influences
Our influences are pretty varied, I love everything from Metallica to Alison Krauss with some Joe Satriani thrown in to offset the Jars of Clay and a bit of Mew, vomit some Enya all over the Pink Floyd and finally clean it up with some Gnarls Barkley and that might be close. My wife Heather who started out as a classically trained violinist who can also sing, play guitar, piano, viola de gamba, and percussion all of which she hates equally, has now become a hick and loves county music and any sappy chick singers like Tori Amos or Dixie Chicks. I won't even get into the Monster Trucks...
What equipment do you use?
I have a Fender F series beater which I refuse to clean and still have sand on from my last trip to Myrtle Beach in 2001. It also happens to be my first guitar which has been to 3 countries, 16 states, caught in a rainstorm, and has also saved my life in my Sophomore year of high school when I slipped and caught myself with the guitar avoiding a row of metal scaffold with huge bolts sticking out of the top. Needless to say it looks like poo but sounds nice and rich plus it's my baby. I also have a Roland G1 which I run through a nylon Godin Multiac. I have a couple of Martins, a couple of Ibanez S series electrics, a nice Gibson Blues King Electro, an American Standard Fender Strat, and American Highway 1 Telecaster, a PRS Santana and an assortment of other guitars. My wife has a violin that's probably worth more than all of those guitars combined that sits in a case in the basement, a 150 year old Steinway piano, along with her father's basement full of Marimba's and Timpani. (He's the Timpanist for the Symphony here in Baltimore so he's got tons of neat toys!) Oh and she just got a trumpet for Christmas which better not find a sacred spot in "The Land of Forgotten Instruments" also known as our basement. We shall see...
Anything else?
Most of the recordings were done for free at the Sheffield Institute for the Recording Arts by numerous groups of students over the past 12 years. All the mixes were done on the fly at the end of the last class so the results varied quite a bit. Over the years Watson Kain has enjoyed the contributions of many former band members and guest musicians. Contributors include the incredible bassist Matt Carroll, guitarist, engineer, and luthier Dave Pace, my brother and long-time clutch drummer Brent Watson, eccentric shoe-less virtuoso Glenn Workman, drummer Brant Lego, United States Marine, White House Band Stage Manager and French Horn player Rich Dickerson, inadvertent creator of the band and violinist Shannon Peach, Egyptian drummer Hassam el Fikki, amazing guitarist Jason Heiger, bassist Joe Wolfe, violist Christina Greene, vocalist Shannon Hughes, founding member, songwriter and vocalist Mary Barlow, multi-talented musician, songwriter and long time friend Father John Rapisarda, guitarist Todd Witmer, his brother mandolin player and keyboardist Mark Witmer and drummer Jay De Witt. We would like to thank our families as well for putting up with the long rehearsals and noise. Each of these artists put their individual touch into the songs that they were a part of and we want to thank them each for their contribution. Releasing Raincaste, the follow-up CD to 1997's Blue Silver, is an expensive undertaking and now with the wonders of the internet it really is a luxury. The way we want to mix, design, and package Raincaste will require thousands of dollars to be spend to create something that we give away for free so at this point we have decided that Soundclick is the best solution for us. We love to share our music and we encourage you to do the same, please download all of the songs that you want, and give a copy to a friend if you think they'll like it. Again thank you for visiting us here and enjoy!
