Run Red

From an Alan Moore story ('The Curse').A woman is affected by the Native Americans who once lived on the land under her house. The tribe treated menstruating women badly and she develops a hatred of men; becoming a werewolf and killer.
Elaine with Sim, Annie, Joey & Russell play as the completely live, electrifying live band, “Kindred Spirit”; featuring Elaine’s beautiful vocals, powerful songs & guitar playing, Sim’s simply incredible electric violin & electric guitar playing, Annie’s brilliant flute & sax playing, Joey’s solid bass guitar & beautiful harmony vocals & Russell’s expert drumming. Kindred Spirit are renowned for their stunning takes on some classic tracks and will take your breath away with an incredible version of “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” as well as rockier numbers like Pink Floyd’s, “Wish You Were Here” and Bob Dylan’s, “All Along The Watchtower”. The stunning nature of the treatment of these tracks is largely due to the phenomenal electric violin playing of Sim Jones. Heard recently by Ian Gillan of “Deep Purple” Ian was so gob-smacked by Sim’s playing that he immediately recorded Sim doing an electric violin solo over the famous “Smoke On The Water” track for his next DVD project. Ian Gillan said of Sim, “I've been in this business for forty years and I've heard everything but tonight I've heard something completely new." Ian’s manager, Michael Lee Jackson said, “Wait ‘til the other guitarists hear this, they’re going to want to cut their fingers off” They will treat you to Elaine’s own “perceptive and intriguing” songs like the haunting “Run Red” about a woman’s struggle with her inner beast (not about herself Elaine insists!). Elaine has performed her own songs on television, radio and at Glastonbury and Guildford Folk & Blues Festival (to name a few). She is also a member of “London’s finest” female singer / songwriter group, “Girls With Guitars UK”. Another very special feature of the Kindred Spirit band is the musical interplay between lead instrumentalists Sim and Annie. Not only do they produce beautiful solos and foot stomping jigs and reels but they are both superb at on the spot improvisations and fly into thrilling musical duels live on stage.
Band/artist history
Elaine Samuels a powerful solo performer Elaine Samuels has been interviewed and performed live on television and radio a number of times as a solo performer of her original material. She began performing in folk clubs from the age of 14 and, as a solo act, has performed at clubs and festivals up and down the country including Broadstairs Festival, Middlewich Folk and Boat Festival, Whitchurch Festival, Crewe & Nantwich Festival, Cleckheaton Festival, Earth Spirit Festival and many others. She has also performed many pub gigs as a solo act and so has a wide repertoire of covers material and is used to handling crowds of all types. Elaine sings and plays guitar mainly, for which she has had the following reviews:- "Elaine’s picking prowess on guitar comes across and her voice has a raw edge to it reminding me of another versatile singer, Eva Cassidy”, Andy Smythe "Elaine Samuels is a consummate songwriter & singer. A lightness of touch often conceals a deeper intent - ‘The Child Inside’ for example would do credit to Kate Bush”. Clive Pownceby, Tradition Formation of the duo, trio and stunning band, “Kindred Spirit” During the ‘90s Elaine began forming duo, trio and band line-ups, under the name “Kindred Spirit” and recording albums As a duo line-up in the ‘90s, she was booked at Glastonbury Festival, Guildford Folk and Blues Festival and Richmond’s “On The Edge” Festival to name a few. Elaine now has a stunning five-piece “Kindred Spirit” band, with some incredible musicians. You can hear what the band sound like from her web site You can now book any of the line-ups from solo, duo or trio through to the full band. Excellent Musicians Although all the “Kindred Spirit” musicians are excellent, Sim Jones deserves a special mention for his awesome electric violin playing. Classically trained on the violin, Sim also began playing electric guitar in rock bands at an early age and developed an outstanding ability to improvise on both guitar and violin. Sim now performs with an orchestra, a barn dance band (“Tanglefoot”) and with “Kindred Spirit”. He is a little like a Nigel Kennedy meets Jimi Hendrix and with the added dimension of his effects pedals he can go from classical violin sounds to even making his violin speak! Recorded by Ian Gillan from “Deep Purple” Ian Gillan from the legendary rock band Deep Purple heard Sim & Elaine performing by chance in 2005 and was so gob-smacked by Sim’s playing that he recorded Sim soloing over well known track “Smoke On The Water” for a new, interactive DVD (“Gillan’s Inn”), which is due to be released in early 2006.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Kindred Spirit love to play live and do so a great deal in the UK, both at small theatres and festivals as well as at pubs and clubs. You can find our gigs on our main web site at www.elainesamuels.co.uk We had a great gig recently at Central Studio, a small theatre in Hampshire, where we received the following feedback:- "Hi Elaine, just had to drop you a line. Just come back from your Gig at Central Studios, Basingstoke and was knocked out, just Brilliant. I had never heard of you till I saw a flyer in Central Studios some time ago and thought you sounded interesting......slight understatement.....It was the best Gig I have been to in a while and I go to a lot. You remind me of Blackmores Night with a bit of Curved Air thrown in. Great songs (Ace songwriter) Brilliant Musicians. Sim, where has he been all this time, I was never too keen on Violins...till now, he was amazing, change my mind completely on the instrument, sort of Jimi Hendrix of the Violin. Some great work from Annie as well, loved the Sax and Flute, Rhythm team were spot on as well. I cannot say enough how much I enjoyed it and was amazed when I walked outside after buying 3 albums to find it was 20 past eleven... Thanks to all of you for signing all 3 albums and thanks for the discount. Please come back soon, shame you have to do so many Pub gigs, not good for you or people trying to listen, you deserve MUCH better. Thanks again, Martin."
Your musical influences
Kindred Spirit is heavily influenced by my tastes which from the originals point of view include thought provoking myth, legend and the supernatural. I love the violin and flute and this is why they drive the more unusual sound of my rock band along with electric guitar and saxophone. I have always loved Fleetwood Mac, the Moody Blues, Pink Floyd and Peter Gabriel; so these groups have heavily influenced our sound. I also love the flying Celtic jigs and reels too and so our original pieces often weave these jigs and reels into the music, a little like the Corrs. In fact we have been compared to the Corrs and Curved Air as well as Blackmores Night.
What equipment do you use?
We have two main PA systems as well as a couple of TRACE Elliot acoustic combo amps for small solo / duo work. The smaller system is a 300W Peavey mixeramp for duo gigs mainly (which I do quite a lot of). The bigger system is an Allen and Heath PA20 mixer with powered speakers.
Anything else?
Stunning Takes on Classic Tracks and Powerful Original Material Kindred Spirit are renowned for their stunning takes on some classic tracks from groups like Fleetwood Mac, Eagles and Kinks and will take your breath away with an incredible version of “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” as well as rockier numbers, like Bob Dylan’s, “All Along The Watchtower”, the Rolling Stones, “Sympathy For The Devil” and Pink Floyd’s, “Wish You Were Here”.
