Solo musician? Whom plays everything? Want that tight-live sound? The answer: Use only 2 mics in an X-Y configuration. Place mic in the center or next-to-center of the room. Imagine mic as home plate, place other instruments in a semi-circle around the mic like 1st base to 3rd base. Place drum set at 2nd base and get level with preamps and limiters. Never touch the mic or levels from there on out. Record scratch bass track, simple & tight. Then track drums while rocking out to scratch track. Next record guitar while rocking out ONLY to scratch track (adjust amp volume to equal drums. This should regester on the peak meters. Same w/bass.) Then record bass ONLY to scratch track. Now erase scratch track, bring up all instrument levels & record vocals (either thru a PA or close miked.) Mix & serve!!
