The band that would become Karmic Debt was formed in March 2010 when Scott Watson and Brenna Kupferman came together as part of a larger, loosely-knit group of musicians. With Scott's decades of playing and writing classic and progressive rock, formerly with the bands Dreamseed and Watson Kain (both based in Bel Air, MD), and Brenna's more than 30 years of writing, playing and studying in jazz, folk, and world music, having previously sung with The Emperors of Swing in Cleveland and as a solo artist, they found a common sound and began experimenting with writing and recording music together. Shawn Dundon joined the two on bass in September 2010. With his several decades’ experience playing guitar and bass, and his classic and hard rock influences, his playing, songwriting and arranging added more depth to the band's sound. In November of that year, the addition of drummer Sal Cipres, a consummate professional with a progressive and jazz-influenced sound, rounded out the group and allowed them to focus on crafting their sound. Over the next year they continued to write and perform under the name Avalon Sky, including a packed house concert during Havre de Grace's First Friday Festival and as part of a selection of bands for the Baltimore Street Beat Festival in historic Federal Hill. In July, 2012 they added another dimension to the band by bringing in bassist and backing vocalist Eric Kiefer. This gave the band the opportunity to move Shawn Dundon to second guitar where he was finally able to add his impressive skills on that instrument to the mix, giving a more layered quality to the music. Eric, who has been playing bass for nearly 30 years, is also an accomplished guitarist. His diverse influences of blues, rock, funk and jazz added increased depth to the bands sonic palette. His vocals also filled a glaring gap in the music; the timbre of his voice complemented Brenna's vocals perfectly. With the sudden addition of these high-powered sonic weapons, the band exploded with creativity. They began to record their first CD in late 2012. This momentum was slowed, however, when drummer Sal Cipres moved to Germany in early 2013. In March of that year the band welcomed drummer Jamie Bishop and his decades of experience behind the drums. He also enjoys playing guitar and singing. Jamie's rock and pop influences fit right in and his playing provided a soulful quality to the music. With the addition of Jamie, the band officially changed their name to Karmic Debt and finalized recordings for the release of their first EP in late Spring 2013. In early 2014 Nick Rynes joined the band on drums and we began writing for our next album. In 2015 the band moved recording to the newly build Watson Underground Studios. With us in our new home we focused our time on making the best sounding album we could and over the last few years have accumulated hours of music. We have a targeted release date for summer of 2017 so watch this page for updates!
Have you performed in front of an audience?
We play live since its a bit hard to play dead, unless you're a possum, then it would be really impressive to see a possum play the guitar while playing dead wouldn't it? I guess that's technically what Keith Richards is doing right?
