I began playing guitar at age 10. I was inspired by my listening to my next door neighbors band. They were in high school and I would sit outside of his house listening to them rehearse. By the time I was 12 I was playing in a band with some other guy's from middle school. From the time I was 14 - 18 I was playing with the same band. We played the usual type gigs like high school dances, private events and bars. Yea...we were also somehow able to start playing the local bar seen even though a couple of us were under the legal age to be in a bar. During the next decade or so I played in various bands playing top 40 / variety and hard rock. While playing in these bands I would alway's be listening to Jazz. I loved Jazz but really didn't have the chops and experience to play it. I took some music theory classes at the local community college and studied for a few months with jazz guitarist Paul Wingo. This opened up things for me so now my ears were beginning to recognize what was going on with some of the jazz compositions. I never played music full time and in the mid 90s quit playing with a giging band. This actually gave me the opportunity to become a better guitar player. Now instead of learning everyone elses's tunes I could concentrate more on developing my own style. I think my whole style of playing guitar changed during this time. I also had time now to record little in my home studio.
